David W KayDavid founded Robson Kay with his son Jonathan in March 1996. His extensive commercial experience includes

  • Creating and building up a textile company with manufacturing, contracting, retailing and mail order divisions (employing over 200 people), which he sold to a PLC in 1981.
  • Sitting on the main Board of a PLC (employing over 1,500 people) from 1981 until 1984 and dealing with the assessment of (and negotiations relating to) acquisitions and disposals by the PLC.
  • Creating and building up a business travel company, which he sold to Gardner Merchant (part of Trust House Forte PLC).
  • Participating in a consortium which purchased Wembley (the stadium/conference centre/exhibition centre etc.) and reversing it into a PLC.
  • A multiplicity of commercial property acquisitions, developments and disposals.

In 1992, after a career change, he became a valuer, auctioneer and agent, specialising in assisting insolvency practitioners, banks and A.B.L.’s and some four years later, started Robson Kay (together with Jonathan).

His wide ranging business experience and acumen combined with handling over 5,000 insolvency/corporate recovery instructions, leaves him uniquely placed to advise Insolvency Practitioners, banking and A.B.L. clients.

David was invited to join Mensa having been tested by them as having an I.Q. of 156

Particular areas of expertise are textile manufacturing, multiple retailing, direct mail, contracting, business travel and construction plant.

He applies his commercial expertise to case handling with a very “hands on” approach.

Jonathan B Kay MNAVA

Jonathan B KayJonathan co-founded the business with his father David in March 1996, having previously worked in fund management where he rose to become Group Investment Manager of Morfitt & Turnbull, a subsidiary of a large national PLC, being responsible for in excess of £100m of client investments.

An accomplished public speaker, Jonathan is Robson Kay’s principal auctioneer and is regularly asked to contribute to interviews in the national and local press and radio. Jonathan also frequently gives his time in an honorary capacity to charity auctions for a variety of good causes.

Jonathan was also invited to join Mensa having been tested by them as having an identical I.Q. to his father of 156

Jonathan has been a member of the Turnaround Management Association (UK Chapter), an International Association dedicated to corporate renewal and turnaround management, since 2003.

Jonathan is also a member of the National Asociation of Valuers & Auctioneers

Jonathan is another of Robson Kay’s principal case handlers with areas of expertise including plant and machinery, financial services, IT and high tech related businesses, construction plant and the medical industry.

David P Jeans BSc FRICS ACI Arb

David P JeansDavid has 35 years experience in the property industry, working at several national firms including Storey Sons & Parker, Eddisons and most recently, Edward Symmons.

David has been a Fellow of the RICS for more than 20 years and is also a Chartered Arbitrator.

David handles all Robson Kay's property related instructions, including valuing, marketing and selling properties and dealing with wide variety of landlord and tenant and other property issues.

Rashid M Bhana

Rashid M BhanaThe Accountant’s Accountant. Rashid has been a qualified accountant for 30 years, spending half his time as the in-house accountant for a Manchester based Chartered Accountancy practice, hence his nickname. He spends the other half of his week as our in-house accountant.

In addition to his more mainstream duties, Rashid’s most important job is looking after our segregated Client Account, held with Barclays Bank Plc.

We pride ourselves on our particularly prompt payment service to clients - Rashid’s priority every Monday morning being to reconcile our Client Account and ensure payment is made immediately to all our clients for monies received in the previous week.

The Auction Administration Team

The Auction Administration TeamOur team of five, ably led by Sue Sherlock, deal with cashiering, clerking and much more throughout the auction and tender process, together with assisting in monitoring the significant number of transactions that take place within our Client Account on a daily basis, as a result of private treaty and tender sales, as well as auctions.

The Auction Room Team

The Auction Room TeamLed by Mike Ronan, our senior porter, we employ a team of nine men based at our auction complex.

Our team is vastly experienced with several members having now worked for Robson Kay for in excess of 10 years. The nature of the work we undertake means the team has to be extremely flexible, dealing with all manner of property and plant related viewings, ROT inspections, cataloguing and lotting for auctions and much, much more.

Between the team there is a wide variety of areas of specialism, including qualified electricians, IT specialists, specific industry specialists (such as construction plant, bakery and printing industries) and much more.

The team are also responsible for many of our asset uplifts, using our own fleet of vehicles and forklift trucks.

RobsonWho is Robson? Robson was actually the Kay family pet dog, whom the business was named after.

To this day, we regularly receive calls asking to speak to Mr Robson, however Robson unfortunately passed away in 1997, although some callers find it difficult to accept this and insist that they are a personal friend of Mr Robson!

Gary H Harper MNAVA

Gary HarperGary has 17 years experience in corporate recovery and insolvency asset valuations, having previously worked in the commercial property and land buying sectors for 12 years.

For the past seven years he has worked for King Sturge and Savills in their plant and machinery divisions.

He has specialised in agency instructions within the corporate recovery and insolvency market and has dealt with a wide range of industry sectors over the years, including construction, engineering, automotive, warehousing and logistics and transport.

He has a reputation of being the valuer colleagues turn to with unusual cases and has valued such esoteric assets as bull semen and longhaired miniature dachshunds in corporate and personal insolvency cases.

Gary is also a member of the National Association of Valuers and Auctioneers.
